is hidden. i remember for a book i did called "the agenda" on bill clinton, and it was about his economic plan. i interviewed him once, and it was on background. but he's talked about it, so i have talked about it. and you go into to the oval office. this was early 1994, and clinton drills you with this eye contact that is absolutely a gravitational force. i've never seen anyone maintain eye contact like bill clinton. and to a -- and it's unblinking. and he just stares and, of course, it creates a sense of intimacy, it slows time down, and i remember thinking this eye contact is amazing, and somebody later suggested to me, said, well, he wanted to be president ever since he was 5. [laughter] and he decided to contribute all organs in the body to the task. [laughter] including the eyes. clinton was president and our economy had the biggest surplus in history, and created a lot of millionaires. governor romney said it is fair that he pays a lower tax rate and a teacher or autoworker who makes $50,000. he is wrong. i refuse to ask middle-class families to give up their deductions for having a home or raising a kid, just to pay for another millionaire's tax cut. i refuse to pay for that tax cut by asking students to pay more for college, taking kids out of head start programs, or eliminating health care for millions of americans who are poor or disabled or elderly. that is the choice we face in this election. that is what the election comes down to. over and over, we have been told by governor romney, congressman ryan, and their allies in congress, that unless government can do everything, they should do almost nothing. if you cannot afford health insurance, and do not get sick. if a country releases air pollution, that is the price of progress. if you cannot afford to go to college, just borrow money from your parents. you know what? that is not who we are. t

're still raising money. tonight in los angeles mr. obama will be joined by bill clinton at a fund-raiser, and the president continues to shatter records. he's nearly doubled the number of fund-raisers george bush held and has dwarfed his other predecessors. it's paid off. last month a new fund-raising record, $181 million in just 30 days. a total of 835 million breaking his own record of four years ago. mitt romney has raised at least $548 million, and here's what's remarkable, if both men had stayed in what's known as the public financing system in which they can't take huge donations but then get matching federal funds, they could have only each spent $135 million. that means the president has really raised six times what he would have been allowed if he had stayed in the public financing system. now, mitt romney is going to continue today to try and flip florida into his column. he has another appearance in port st. lucie a little bit later today. >> astonishing numbers, david, thank you. >>> we'll turn to the political showdown, not between presidential candidates, but rather

. that rate is the one that inflates when bill clinton was president, the economy created 23 million new jobs, the biggest surplus in history, a whole lot of millionaires to boot. governor romney says it is fair that he pays the same tax rate as a teacher that makes $50,000. he is wrong. i refuse to pay for that tax cut by asking you students to pay for college or kicking kids out of head start programs for limiting health-care for millions of americans who are poor or disabled or elderly. that is the choice we face in this election. that is what the election comes down to. over and over we have been told by governor romney and congress in mind that says the government cannot do everything, it should do nothing. if you cannot afford health insurance, will be do not get sick. if a company releases pollution, that is the price of progress. if you cannot afford to go to college or start a business, bar money from our parents. you know what? that is not who we are, that is not what this country is about. we believe we're in this together. we understand it is about what can be done by us as one na
